Several great …
Several great photographers have produced beautiful shots of trains that were actually backing and you would never know it (A. Aubrey Bodine, coincidentally, known for his coverage of the WM, comes to mind). The slower speed is easier to focus. Then I’d get the video of the train chugging (forward) past me. But that is just how I would do it.

I got one camera …
I got one camera and it works to capture still pictures and videos as well. I did my still pictures when the engine runby forward and capture videos when it is backward. I always put still pictures in very first place and videos are minor.
